What Are Holter and Event Monitors?

Holter and event monitors are compact, wearable devices that track your heart’s electrical activity over an extended period. They help identify abnormal rhythms that might not be detected during a routine EKG.

Why Might You Need This Test?

Your provider may suggest heart rhythm monitoring to:

  • Detect arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)
  • Investigate causes of fainting or lightheadedness
  • Track heart function after a cardiac procedure
  • Evaluate how well a treatment is working

What to Expect During Monitoring

Holter Monitor:

  • Worn continuously for 1 to 2 days
  • Records heart activity nonstop
  • You can continue daily routines, but avoid getting the monitor wet

Event Monitor:

  • Worn for several days or even weeks
  • Records only when symptoms are present
  • You may need to activate the device when you feel symptoms

Understanding the Results

Your doctor will analyze the data collected to look for any irregular heart rhythms. If any concerns are found, they may recommend further evaluation or treatment.
