What Is an EKG?

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a quick, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It helps doctors detect abnormal rhythms, signs of a heart attack or other cardiac issues.

Why You Might Need an EKG

Your provider may order an EKG if you have:

  • Chest discomfort or trouble breathing
  • Unusually fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Episodes of dizziness or fainting
  • A personal or family history of heart problems

What Happens During the Test

  • The procedure is painless and takes around 10 minutes
  • Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms and legs
  • You’ll lie still while the machine records your heart’s electrical signals
  • No special preparation is required, and you can resume normal activities right after the test

How to Understand the Results

Your doctor will examine the results for any irregularities in heart rhythm or other concerns. If anything unusual is found, they may recommend additional tests or follow-up care.
